In 1777, as Spain prepared for war with Great Britain, young Bernardo de Galvez was appointed governor of Spanish Louisiana from his home in New Orleans. When British forces attempted to navigate up the Mississippi and infiltrate the territory, he broke convention, uniting soldiers of all cultures and ethnicities to turn back the advances and aid the Colonial American efforts. An uncertain time hand found its unconventional hero, and Galvez would never suffer defeat. In celebration, we raise an eternal toast.
Galvez’s mantra, translating to “I Alone,” was a calling card for his daring and fearlessness. Through his bold efforts in the quest for American independence — and in Cuba, where he helped reinforce Louisiana’s connection with Latin America and the Caribbean — Galvez was an instrumental, yet greatly unsung, contributor to New Orleans’s identity and America’s birth.
At Galvez, we craft world-class rums with the same spirit and passion that defined our namesake. Just as Bernardo de Galvez united people from many backgrounds and circumstances, we gather the best ingredients and materials from Spain, France and the Caribbean, all convening in Louisiana to make rums for those who seek the unconventional.
Alongside our partner distillery in the Caribbean, Galvez Rums are crafted from molasses before aging in American Oak barrels to impart the flavor of the bourbon these vessels once carried. Years later, our rum is separately aged in Spanish Oloroso sherry and French brandy casks before blending to perfection as our Silver rum. Our rum maestro has worked with the owner’s family in the worldwide sugar industry for over 40 years. He learned the craft of making rum while in Cuba in the 1970s. Due to the mutual interest in fine rums, the owner teamed up with him to create the Galvez Rums.
